The police of the Preobrazhenskoye district of Moscow have detained a 55-year-old Muscovite on suspicion of stealing a relic from the Church of the Transfiguration.

It has been specified that the parishioner secretly stole the Gospel from the sanctuary on Preobrazhenskaya Square. He then hastened to flee.

The man explained that he has borrowed the book in order to soak up the Orthodox culture. The stolen item has been confiscated.

An investigation department of the Preobrazhenskoye District Police Department in Moscow initiated criminal proceedings. The criminal case was initiated on the grounds of the crime provided by part 1 of article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation "Theft".

A preventive measure in the form of signed acknowledgement of travel restrictions and appropriate behaviour was imposed on the suspect.
