CELINE RESORT 2021 AD CAMPAIGN

Dutch model Rianne Van Rompaey is shot by Hedi Slimane in his Resort 2021 range for Celine's newest campaign.

Van Rompaey is captured in black and white in the traditional Hedi Slimane style, alternating between studio portraiture and outdoor shots along the coast of Saint-Tropez. Van Rompaey's long and tattered hair blows softly in the wind, her freckles accentuating her neoclassical elegance, an ethereal yet earthy springtime beauty.

One of the pictures stands out from the rest: Van Rompaey holds an apple, pulls a bite out of it and looks into the camera deeply. Of course, the picture looks reminiscent of Eve and the prohibited fruit. Slimane seems to be referring to concepts of femininity, self-knowledge, and modesty through this imagery.

But all of this imaginative intrigue is absent from the rest of the campaign, and so it might be too much of a stretch to pull more creative sense out of it. Instead, the campaign is another solid example of the consistency and singularity of vision with which Slimane creates the image of the brand.

In other news, Y’S Spring 2021 Ready-to-Wear. It was indeed true to brand, and got straight to the point. Using natural fabrics such as Cupro, rayon and cotton, the design team succeeded in walking that very fine line between understated and interesting.
